Copepods - Acartia tonsa
Foods-Live
Starter culture. Acartia tonsa is a calanoid copepod that has been extensively studied and used in aquaculture. It feeds on microalgae not detritus and remains in the water column where it presents itself as a natural food for predators. Its stop-and-go movements trigger (natural) feeding responses from fish larvae, sea horse fry, adults and other organisms. The nauplii are 80-90um and the adults approximately 300-500um. They carry eggs and will release up to 80 per day under ideal circumstances. These are not recommended for use in stocking refugiums; they may survive pumps but need microalgae to thrive. It should be noted that if there is not adequate food available they will cannabalize thier young! Unlike rotifers or artemia, the calanoid copepod nutritional profiles have been responsible for reduced deformities, proper development and reduced fatalities in larval aquaculture.
Starter culture contains approximately 1000 copepods.
