Hippocampus erectus

Common Names: Lined Seahorse, Northern Seahorse

Hippocampus erectus Seahorse Characteristics: H. erectus are a deep chested, robust and hardy seahorse. They often have lined patterns throughout the body, with or without saddle markings. Colors typically range from black, brown, grey, green, yellow, orange, and red. Colors are not fixed and may change based surroundings, diet, stress, mood or possibly other factors. They may or may not have cirri.

Distribution: Altantic Coast of the US and in the Gulf of Mexico. They have been found as far north as Nova Scotia and are believed to go as far south as Brazil.

Habitat: Commonly found in sea grasses along coastal areas.

Size: Commonly 5 to 7 inches. May reach up to 8 inches. Males typically larger than females.

Sexual Maturity: Believed to be around 8 months. We have seen it as early as 4 months. H. Erectus from southern waters typically have fry that are benthic. Fry from H. erectus from northern waters typically go through a pelagic phase and are more difficult to rear.

Minimum Tank Size Recommendations: 18 inches vertical height. 25 to 30 gallons for a pair. 30 to 40 gallons for 2 pairs.

Water Temperature: 72 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit. 22 to 25 degrees Celsius.
